Green Sea Turtles in San Diego Bay
Thursday, October 29
Many people don’t realize that we have 60-80 Eastern Pacific Green Sea Turtles living in south San Diego Bay.
We will start offering our Green Sea Turtle Discovery Tours on November 1 and will continue through March.
During the summer months, the turtles swim over 1000 miles south to the Revillagigedo Islands south of Baja. There they breed and lay their eggs before returning to San Diego.
In the winter they are here to feed on the abundant eel grass beds in South Bay.
We take groups out in the kayaks to search for the turtles and explore the south part of the bay where thousands of birds hang out during their winter migration.
The turtles are elusive and we don’t see many. They need to come up to breathe so we watch for a large head to pop up. Sometimes they drop right back underwater but sometimes they come up again to take another look at us.
The turtles weight from 100 to 600 lbs so their heads are pretty big. About the size of a softball.
A special thrill is seeing Wrinkebutt, the largest female sea turtle of the group, who last weighed in at 595 lbs.
Bring your family and friends and come on down for our fun Green Sea Turtle Discovery Tour.
